SP2-RM1 Livestock as a strategic resource in resettled smallholdings

Livestock production, especially small-ruminant keeping, is an important agricultural practice in the semi-arid NEB. It is not only an important income source, but also part of the cultural identity of the region. Feed shortage in the dry season and in drought years is a major challenge and limiting factor for livestock production. Therefore, new strategies have to be implemented in order to provide enough feed to meet the needs of the animals without degrading the ecosystem. Fodder production is already a well adopted strategy against feed shortage. Forage conservation is a further promising strategy to increase forage availability for the dry season, however, is jet rarely practiced. Knowledge about forage conservation in form of hay and silage making is still not very distributed among farmers. Hence, leaflets about those technologies were prepared and distributed to provide information among livestock farmers in the project region.

The leaflets in portuguese can be accessed here (hay) and here (silage).
